Florentine Mosaic: do you know this old mosaic technique?

 

It’s a combination of hard or semiprecious stones, so that their natural colours represent figures and inlaid in a background usually of black or white marble.

Florence is world famous for its mosaics. Have you ever been to Opicifio delle pietre dure? It is a fantastic museum of Florence where you can find the most important works of Florentine mosaic.

 

Our course is held in the artisan’s workshop. It is located in a medieval village near Florence. You can book a 24, 48, 72 or 96 hour course.

The programme includes:

• Types of stones

• Utensils and their use

• Machines for cutting the stones

• The design

• Transfer to adhesive paper

• Gluing of the paper to the stone

• Cutting

• Composition of the artefact

• Filling

• Finishing and polishing

Florentine Mosaic Course

 

Our Florentine mosaic course is held in an artisan workshop “bottega” in Tuscany.

The workshop is characterized by the care and attention with which the local artisan will treat you, taking care of all your needs.

 

The workshop is located in a medieval village 40 kms from Florence.

 

The course is usually held in Italian with the use of some English. The programme is open to all levels, beginners included.

  • Water, gas and electricity costs are included.
  • Sheets and towels are provided.
  • The flats are shared with Italians, which makes it easier to practise the language.
  • Accommodation is allocated approximately 20 days before your arrival in Italy.
  • In some cases, it is possible to request a private bathroom (at an additional cost).

If you prefer, you can also request other types of accommodation, such as private apartments or stays with Italian families with half board, always in areas well connected to the centre of the city.
